Transmission repair cost calculator

A transmission replacement costs $6,166 to $6,685 and a transmission fluid change $282 to $343, per RepairPal. This calculator prices all four transmission jobs off the same published tables, with every figure sourced.

This page is general information, not professional advice. It cannot see your car or read its codes, and the only number that counts is a written estimate from a shop that has driven it.

1. What is the repair?

Every repair here is one RepairPal publishes a national fair-price range for, split into labor and parts. Pick the one on your estimate.

2. Which state are you in?

AAApublishes a table headed “Average Cost of Labor” for all fifty states and the District of Columbia, sourced from World Population Review. Your state changes that readout and nothing else — read why below the tool.

Why your state does not change the number above: nobody publishes a state multiplier for a RepairPal estimate, and the two figures are not even the same unit — AAA’s table is an average cost of labor per repair, while its hourly figures are a separate band. Scaling one by the other would be our arithmetic wearing two sources’ clothes. So the state is a readout, and the tool says so instead of hiding a made-up factor inside a total.

Four jobs, not one

“Transmission repair” is the phrase people search and it covers a spread of more than twenty to one on RepairPal’s own tables. A transmission fluid change is $282 to $343. A leaking trans oil pan gasket is $498 to $646. A clutch replacement, on a manual car, is $1,598 to $2,011. A full replacement is $6,166 to $6,685. A shop quoting the last of those when the car needs one of the first three is the single most costly mix-up in this trade, which is why the tool makes you pick.

Where the labor goes

RepairPal publishes the split, and it is not what people expect. On a transmission replacement, parts are about $5,053 of the $6,166 to $6,685 — the unit itself is most of the bill and labor is $1,112 to $1,632. On the pan gasket it reverses: parts about $181 and labor $317 to $465. So on the cheap job you are buying hours and on the expensive one you are buying a part, and the question to ask a shop is different in each case.

AAA explains how those hours get priced: a flat-rate manual gives the average time for the repair and the shop multiplies by its hourly rate, so a fast technician and a slow one bill the same. AAA publishes that almost half of all shops price labor between $120 and $159 per hour. The tool divides one published figure by the other and prints the book hours, so a quote that is double the hours is visible as a question about hours rather than an argument about the rate.

What this tool will not do

It will not scale RepairPal’s range by your state. AAA’s state table is headed “Average Cost of Labor” and is a per-repair average sourced from World Population Review, not an hourly rate and not a published multiplier — so it is rendered as its own readout beside the estimate and never folded into it. It will not quote a rebuild against a replacement, because RepairPal publishes one and not the other. And it will not tell you whether to fix the car or sell it: that turns on what your car is worth, which is a different question with a different source.

Questions people ask about this

How much does it cost to fix a transmission?
RepairPal publishes $6,166 to $6,685 for a transmission replacement, with labor at $1,112 to $1,632 and parts at about $5,053. But "fix a transmission" covers four very different jobs on RepairPal's own tables, and the cheapest of them is a $282 to $343 fluid change. Pick the job above before you accept a number.
Is a transmission leak expensive to fix?
Not on its own. RepairPal publishes $498 to $646 for a trans oil pan gasket replacement — labor $317 to $465, parts about $181 — which is the common source of a red puddle. The expensive outcome is a leak left alone until the transmission runs low, and that is the $6,166 to $6,685 job.
Is it worth replacing a transmission?
That is a question about your car's value, not about the transmission, and this page does not pretend to answer it. What it gives you is the published number to hold against your car: RepairPal's $6,166 to $6,685 for the replacement, next to what a rebuild or a used unit is quoted at locally, next to what your car is worth today.
Why does the calculator not ask for my make and model?
Because the figures on this page are RepairPal's national estimates, and asking for a car we then ignore would be theatre. RepairPal itself publishes vehicle-specific estimates on its own site and its trans oil pan gasket page alone spans a Nissan Altima to a Toyota Camry — a wide gap. Use this tool for the national picture, then RepairPal's own estimator for your car.
Does a transmission repair calculator give me a quote?
No, and any tool that says it does is guessing. RepairPal's own caveat travels with every range here: it excludes taxes and fees, does not factor in your location, and related repairs may also be needed. A shop that has driven the car and read the codes is the only source of a number anyone is bound by.
